A shearlegs hoist
I am a great admirer of George Sellios and his attachment to super detailing his layout. I want my layout however small also to contain numerous vignettes or scenes within scenes. There is a small ledge on the cliff in front of City Square with a couple of small trees and some brush. I was looking at pictures of hoists and came upon a simple shearlegs and decided to build an old, disused one and put it on this ledge to up the visual interest.
I built the shearlegs from scale 10"x10" lumber, distressed and stained with alcohol washes. To convey age and disuse further I wanted a vine wrapped around it.

I made the vine from a length of sisal fibre stained with alcohol washes. Stretched on a holder I dabbed on white glue and dusted on Woodland Scenics turf followed by a spray of permanent adhesive to keep it on the string. When dry I hot glued one end to the bottom of one leg, let that set and carefully wrapped the vine around the model, finally trimming to length and gluing the other end. A few dabs of white glue and some more foam on bare patches and the model was ready to place.
The shearlegs was fixed with superglue to the scenery
Done and dusted.
I know that this little model is something that disappears into the scenery but to me these tiny elements help to build the composite picture. They are the support actors who make the story come to life.
