A yard office

I was inspired by a model on George Sellios' FSM Railroad of an old boxcar made into a yard office.  I had to hand a very old boxcar that I'd scratchbuilt from Evergreen siding and Grandt Line fittings that never got to riding on trucks. I so dislike working on rolling stock that I'm committed to buying all mine in future. So...

I took off the roof and doors and levered out the lead weights glued to the floor. During this process the doorway I'd opened up got damaged as the plastic is a bit brittle. No worries it was a bad-order car that the railroad had converted so a few repairs were in order.

As the interior was going to be lit, I made some bookshelves from strip and card with printed books on etc and dug out some old plastic furniture mouldings to go inside.

I built a lean to at the back,(which will never be seen on the railroad sadly) from evergreen siding and the windows from an old Bachman Brill trolley body I'd had lying around for years.

This side can't be seen from the layout edge. Shame I like those windows!

  3. Hi Barry. I've visited again today (Nov 18/16), looked at all 19 of your Yard Office photos, and read your comments. Photo 14 gave me the idea that with that track back there (on the right in said photo) the lean to & its windows can be enjoyed from the perspective of a phone or wee video cam set on the nose of a flat car in front of a loco. Souds too electro gimmicky for some, but a few friends have enjoyed the surprising results of such travelling videos of their layouts, grateful for all the work they did behind structures. One in particular was moving & had to dismantle the old layout. He invited friends over to see the video and also posted it on youtube-a record of his now old (beautiful) layout. He is building his new layout (another N scale E&N) and he recently presented a clinic on the changes form one layout to another. He was able to keep some of the old, including what was modelled behind, that he had not appreciated for years, until that wee cam travelled around on his track and recorded his handiwork. ;-) Thanks again for the enjoyable blog posts, Barry.

  4. You're always welcome Graham. Yes perhaps a video tour one day would be a good idea.
